Don’t let the seemingly bright scene of the bottom floor of the staircase in the Nurses’ Building on North Brother Island fool you.  This was a two-minute exposure aided with a few 78 W/S strobe pops off a back wall out of frame to the right, to imitate natural light coming in from the bottom - the staircase is almost pitch black.  But it’s a gorgeous staircase, especially for not being the main staircase, but rather a rear staircase for nurses living in the North Wing annex.  It is likely that “Typhoid” Mary Mallon once held on to the cast iron railings here.
